It's an Oil Bath
I'm sure we've seen this chart before. Oh, that's right. We did. It's here, called Silver! Remember that? Unfortunately, Oil has far more impact and the lack of oil creates plenty of other problems. I won't re-hash the reasons for the spike we are seeing in oil, we all know the reasons and I'm sure we all hope that we see resolution before the damage and the casualties mount further and definitely without further escalation. The key question here is "how long does this last?"

Reporting Season Wrap
The easy discussion today would probably be War or the price of Oil (or Petrol..eek). But the answer to the question is, “I don’t know”. How long does it go far. Does it spread? Or perhaps, end quickly. All outcomes give different results for potential action. Instead, lets talk the February reporting season. UBS released a report that gave us a quaint little summary. Positive earnings surprises outnumbered the misses (i.e. profit below expectation) at a ratio of 2 to 1.

The Rise of AI
This week has seen the plenty of market moving views. Perhaps the biggest was a thought piece from Citrini Research on the impact of AI on the US economy and investment & bond markets. It’s a long read but interesting. THE 2028 GLOBAL INTELLIGENCE CRISIS This prompted a few responses that they were just a little bit crazy (they admit at the end of the doom & gloom article most of it probably won't happen) but it clearly articulates why the market has been aggressively sel

Housing Turn Around
Housing affordability is a huge topic of discussion in Australia. The price of a unit in Brisbane increased by 13% over the last year and in some areas (like Mount Lofty) average prices rose nearly 30%. If affordability was a problem it is obviously a bigger problem after that because wages didn’t rise anywhere near as much and now, rates are on the rise. Affordability however isn’t just an Australian problem though. It remains a problem in much of the Western World and Go

CSL Ltd (CSL)
CSL has long been a dream shareholding. For decades the price only seemed to go from bottom left, to top right. I started in the investment world in 2005 and CSL wasn’t near $20. It was an amazing run. Then it went wrong. What specifically went wrong though? Unfortunately that isn’t a simple answer, it rarely is. First, there was COVID-19. While many pharma companies benefited CSL had issues. Blood plasma collection requires people to be able to move freely and lockdowns proh

AI versus Commodity Capital Expenditure
Much is being made of the investment in Artificial Intelligence (AI). In fact, global spending on artificial intelligence is projected to reach US$2.52 trillion in 2026, according to a forecast by Gartner . This represents a 44% increase from 2025, reflecting a significant growth trajectory in AI investments. This expenditure should underpin the ‘tech bubble’ for a little longer but the Capex cycle for the ‘old economy’ has been depressed. Analysts have consistently foreca

The Shrinking China Problem
20 January 2026 This week we could talk endlessly about Trump, Greenland and the race for resources, but we’re not. Let’s talk about China, a change in fortunes for Travel Companies and Property price forecasts. Fresh data released on January 19 th (our time) highlighted a widening gap between headline GDP growth and underlying economic momentum, with demographics, deflation and investment weakness weighing on the outlook. Here is a quick summary: Births fell to a recor
